OUR STORY

As a former Secondary School Food Teacher and Hospitality worker, our founder is an avid foodie.

Having grown up in South East London, as a descendant of the ‘Windrush Generation’ - She spent plenty of time in the kitchen with her parents and grandparents, both here in the UK and Jamaica learning many traditional recipes and secret special methods along the way.

However, having grown up and worked in inner city London, she saw a lot of friends, family, students and young people going through difficult situations; such as being at-risk of crime, trying to reintegrate into communities after leaving prison, facing homelessness, unemployment, lack of funding and opportunities.

Now, with her passions for working with young people and food, she started BakeYard as a Social Enterprise - along with her family and friends to help meet the ‘kneads’ of local young people through baking, cooking and community building.

In their quaint Caribbean Cafe with outdoor ‘Yard’ space - they serve up their slow-cooked, home style dishes and baked goods.

Amongst the laid back, homely interior you’ll meet some of the young people and community members they work with via their cooking classes, mentoring programme and community-networking dinner clubs.

As a home away from home, they truly believe that “Yard is where the heart is” and want everyone to feel like they are tasting and experiencing “home on a plate”.
